Hiroshima is best known as the first city in history to be destroyed by a nuclear weapon when the United States Army Air Forces dropped an atomic bomb on it near the end of World War II. Hiroshima means "Wide Island". Most notable is the Dome which was the only structure left standing near the bomb’s hypocenter, therefore it is named the "Genbaku Dome". |
| Miyajima is famous for the Itsukushima Shrine. According to records, the shrine was established in the time of Empress Suiko. The warrior-courtier Taira no Kiyomori gave the shrine its present form. The island is one of Hayashi Razan's "Three Views of Japan". |
